WTF - Dog vs. Children

There are some mornings I actually like my dog more than my kids, not this morning - the kids won. Then I realized my kids and dog have a lot in common:

They are alike in that:

They lie around a lot, in the same position. Then they get up, stretch and lie down in a new position.

They leave shit on the floor, expecting me to clean it up.

They eat anything that comes out of a can.

They sleep a lot. I mean A LOT!

They depend on me to take them anywhere.

They are not in common when:

My dog is happy to see me, my teenager - not so much. Especially when I am early to carpool and he's talking to a girl.

My dog eats the same thing every day and doesn't complain.

My dog listens to me the first time, wait a minute, scratch that neither listen to me.

My dog doesn't whine, my kids are masters at it.

My dog can be bribed to do anything with small amounts of food.

Then my kids win:

I still have to periodically clean shit off my dog's butt, thank god my children grew out of this.

I've never had to chase my child down the street whistling.

I've never had to cut cockleburs out of a child's hair while holding them down.

My children know that skunks spray.

My kids don't lick their butt.

My dog still takes a dump on the floor.

My kids don't eat dead stuff then come inside and puke it on the only carpeted place in the house.

My kids are easier to bathe.

I guess I've lived both worlds, having the kids, then as they demanded, getting the dog. Honestly I wouldn't live without either one.

Oh, there's a mess I need to clean up.

SIT! What? I said, SIT!

I can settle different parts of my life based on the four legged friends in my life.  Their age, moving at the speed of 7 years at a pop means that there are many passing through my years.
My favorite childhood memory was dogs that never listen.  I believe this taught me early in childhood that it was considered in good taste to not listen to my mother.  Because, no one, not even the dog listened to her.  We would periodically look her way wondering, "Why is she screaming like a maniac?"

Sometimes my brother would listen, but that's because all of us, including the dog, thought he was a brown noser.  He also enjoyed telling on us all the time.

We learned the not listening trick from the first dogs that I can remember.  Taffy #1 and Taffy #2.  Taffy #1 hated my grandmother, so much that she'd take a shit every morning right outside my grandmother's bedroom door when she came to visit.  We'd swear up and down that we took her for a LONG walk but, she saved what she had in her shit savings account making a withdraw right before my grandmother woke.

Taffy #2 was brought into the house when Taffy #1 passed from old age.  Not to confuse us children about which dog is which, they both looked exactly the same (pekingese) and answered to the name "Taffy."  Taffy #2 didn't have as much of a beef with my grandmother, or with us kids.  She hid with us in the closet so we could cut her, and our, hair.  She did everything we asked of her, and not a single thing my mother asked her to do.  Simple things, like please go to the bathroom outside, or if someone peed in the toilet and didn't flush it, please do not drink it.  Poor Taffy #2 didn't listen to anyone when they we were yelling, "GET OUT OF THE WAY," and ended up in the back yard after an unfortunate encounter with the back wheel of our station wagon.  All I remember was my father saying, "We have reservations at Disney World in two days, the dog's dead."
This brought Red into our life.  A very large Golden Retriever who came into our house due to tragic circumstances of his own.  After giving birth, his mother was shot by a neighbor because his father kept getting into the hen house (but that's another story for later.)  This dog had such a gregarious personality, and he was such a cute puppy that he got away with not listening.  We took him to obedience school, which he flunked.  Tried a private instructor when he dragged me down the street on my belly chasing after a squirrel.  Red also caused neighbor troubles like his father, his being that he'd take a big shit in the neighbor's yard, him yelling that he knew it was OUR dog because of all the neon Crayola Crayons making the shit psychedelic.

The dog would go and find rabbits, decapitate them and bring them home as a prize for us, usually throwing the bloody head or leg on my father's bare foot because he was constantly trying to earn the love of the one person that never noticed him.  He noticed when something cold and slimy hit his foot.  He got put into the dog house in the garage when he decided that he could eat my brother's rabbit (Thumper) as fair game and leave the head in my brother's bed.

My mother would complain that the dog never listened to her, that something would happen to him, but when push came to shove, he showed her he did really hear something in obedience class.  We were all in the station wagon on the way home from school, coming around an off ramp close to home when the dog decided he didn't feel like staying in the car with fighting kids, jumping out of the back window, going for a run!  My mother pulls over to the side of the highway, we're out running, except my baby sister who is wailing in the car, trying to corral the dog who's thinking, "Wow, I should have done this sooner if I knew it was such a fun game of keep away."

My mother pulls out the "Mom Voice," that voice that gains the most naughtiest of kids attention, not making them be good, but gaining their attention.  It comes deep from her belly, sounding like the spawn of Satan.

"Red.  SIT!"

Granted the dog flunked obedience school, ate through most of the house (2 rabbits, 4 door jams, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 hairbrushes) oh, and of course 6.5 boxes of Crayola crayons.  We all figured a car was going to dispose of Red and Daddy would bring home a Red #2.  (What?  That's where kid's minds go.)

Like drunks, kids and dogs, God watches over them, much to our amazement, the dog's butt slowly lowers to the ground with a look of, "Am I really in trouble?"  He doesn't move until my mother gets the leash on him saying, "Good boy," which he promptly jumps on her, knocking her over.

She brings him back to the car, "Maybe something did stick with him after three sets of obedience classes."  He jumps in the back with us kids, spreading mud all over us.  We didn't care, we didn't need a Red#2.

Obedience classes?  Are you kidding?  Later than evening my grandmother comes to visit wearing a coat and rabbit skin hat.  Red, in slow motion, on the hunt, comes through the den, into the laundry room toward her.  In his mind, he is that wolf getting ready for the kill.

"Red.  SIT!"  My mother tries the Mom voice again.

He tackles my grandmother to the ground, attacks the hat right off of her head, shakes it (fur flying everywhere) disappearing out the back door into the night with his kill.  My grandmother (not the smallest of women) struggles back up, "I'm glad he didn't get my fox stole."

Later when he comes back after effectively killing the rabbit hat, we notice a box of Crayola crayons has gone missing.

Some things never change.

5 minutes in Dog Years

I need to go outside.

No really, I really need to go out side.

Whew, thanks for opening the door.

Is it just me....

Or do all these women with lots of plastic surgery just look freaky?  Have you seen Dolly Parton lately?

Or does elastic in the slimming jeans not slim, it just makes your butt look bigger when they fall down as you bend over.

Or do you look around when you are doing something wrong wondering if the paparazzi is going to take a picture of you?

Or do you say all kinds of cuss words in your mind, resisting the urge to say them out loud.  Sort of like, "Are you a f*cking idiot?"

Or do you think your kids are the smartest ones out there, and everyone else's are annoying?

^^^is true with your dog too?

Or does seam in your tights looks like a C-section scar when you take them off?

Or do you always feel like you are getting shafted with 100 calorie packs of ANYTHING.

Or do you spend way too much time trying to figure out if a picture is photoshopped, then smiling when you realize you are right?

Or do you sit through 30 minutes of a child's TV show before you realize that you are actually sitting alone?

Or does not a single gas station attendant can give out directions?

Or do you resist commenting or liking anything just posted to your page because then everyone would know you spend all your time on the Internet?

Or is a door never locked when you need it to be locked - bedroom, bathroom, you name it.

What are you quirky observations?

Shawnee - I am dog

I am dog.  I am unique.  I am important in this household, well, except after cat - now there's one egomaniac.  Thank you for bringing your "the dog must stay outside" into your home.  Here's a few ground rules:

Do not interrupt my morning routine.  I must have my time with the Poo Poo bulletin board.

If you wait too long, well, I can't help it.  When it stinks in here - clean it up.

Presenting your butt to me is one of the best gestures you can do.

This house is mine.  Do not change my bed, do not wash anything of mine.  The stinkier the better.

I am the surpreme hunter - I will find the dead squirrels, mice in the yard and bring them to you.  Not because I am the supreme hunter but because they are easy to catch..

Anything left around the home is fair game.  Bagels, Pop Tarts, Bacon, I would rather a little more vermouth in my martinis though.

If I find it on the floor, it is mine.  Especially underwear and socks.

Please don't complain about the dog hair, if you don't like it then don't sit on the couch.

I am the supreme house guard - except for that really nice robber with a biscuit.

I do not do tricks for strangers.  This is something personal just between you and me.  Of course, I'll learn the trick, but then it becomes our little secret.  That blank stare when you ask me to perform means, "I love you."

Oh, I forgot to add, if it is broken, then it is yours.  And of course, the cat did it.

Unconditional Love

Wet nose, warm heart
Unconditional love and an occasional crap in the house.
How did this little ball of fluff wheedle its way into my heart?
You were supposed to be for the kids
Now you give me this pathetic look
so I'll pet you.
It works every time.

After I clean the crap from the floor.......

Happy Birthday Max - A boy and his dog

Max and Shawnee went for a walk,
Side by side, they didn't even talk.
Through the woods, past the trees,
Higher than the hum of the honeybees.

They found their secret spot easily,
Both jumped around the log with glee.
For they even had time to play,
Time to add a picnic to their stay!

Shawnee and Max started with a dance,
The foxes and turkeys joined at first chance.
They circled the secret log and the trees,
Asking the deer to join, if you please.

Next they waged an imaginary battle,
A tree limb for a sword, Max rattled!
Away ran the squirrels, and a skunk,
Luckily he didn't leave any junk.

Finally Max and Shawnee sat in the sun,
sad that and end came to their day of fun.
Soon they'd hear the ding for dinner,
Goodbye fights, dancing, and not a winner!

They made it home in time for great food,
Mac and Cheese perfect fit their mood.
Behind the animals waved goodbye,
Missing Max already with a sigh.

Oh what fun!  Max hugged his dog.
"We fought, we danced, we found our secret log."
He smiled, looked at the animals who seemed so blue.
"Any day with my with dog and my friends will do!"

How to clean a microwave....

This blog is prefaced with a very sarcastic story that involved pudding mix, lots of milk and the idea that if you double the time in the microwave then it will take lest time to complete making the pudding.  Chocolate pudding that is, with something red, oh wait, that was blood, but I'll move past that other part of the story.

Rather than getting out the blow torch and the chisel, especially if you've got a work microwave, there is a very easy way to clean the microwave.  Put a small dog in there and they will have it cleaned out in no time, no elbow grease needed.  Of course make sure you keep the door open, really, I'm just kidding.

Take a bowl of water and put it in the microwave for 5 minutes, this will create enough steam to loosen any foreign objects in the microwave.  Simply wipe down the inside of all gunk and grime and your microwave will shine line new!

Sure there's a little dog that's mighty dissapointed but the clean microwave in a matter of minutes is worth it!  Happy Cleaning (slight sarcasm intended here)!!

Part 2: How to help others screw up their lives....

Now given great examples of how to screw up your life, you wonder what possessed you to do this - your friends.  Everyone else that screwed up their life ahead of you has one desire, put you in the same lifeboat they're sitting in as quickly as possible.  They'll do anything, even lie to get you there.

It starts with the, "Why don't you have kids?"  Life is so much sweeter, better, more rewarding, paradise when you add kids to the mix.  The lie continues when they say, "Oh labor?  Nothing really.  I sneezed and had my child, really you'll forget all about it afterwards."  Lie!  When you've been up for 1 year straight and still have dreams about the 36 hours it took to have the child not to mention the scars from, well, I don't have to tell the FULL truth, you realize - you're in the same boat as them!  And they are over at their house chuckling, thinking, ha!  Got another one, oh look Hannah looks happy and their marriage seems wonderful, better go work on them.

Once life settles down again, for others, here's another way to help them screw it up.  Start sending them adoption notices for local animals.  Or while their kids are at home, stop by with a puppy you are fostering from the shelter, and watch as the children work harder than Bernie Maddof in trying to get out of jail on keeping the puppy.  Help the kids with, "It's just a little thing, little messes are much easier to clean up.  Something this small won't shed that bad."  Then laugh with maniacal glee as you leave the animal there - got another one!

If you need more help in screwing other people's lives up more, when the holidays roll around once again, start early, say summer and mention how wonderful it was to invite the entire family to your house for Christmas, the memories of everyone together, the new traditions, how the kids and new dog enjoyed playing with their 45 cousins.  Say it with me, "Everyone together and chaos?  Nah!  Plus you'll forget about it after they leave, and the great memory will be in EVERYONE's mind....."

How to screw up your life

Everything's going perfect, things are wonderful and of course most people think, gee, I really need to do something to screw my life up so.....

It starts in the younger years, when you've got the apartment, you've got no responsibilities besides work, plenty of time to go out with friends, watch whatever you want on TV, lots of money to spend on cool gadgets and other items YOU like.  Everything seems perfect, the perfect time to screw it up and have kids.  With kids, gone are the times to yourself, hanging out with friends for dinner now happens at Chuck E Cheese not that new trendy restaurant you've read about.  Whatever extra money you had starts with diapers and forumla then as they get older moves from toys, to books to that one single Abercrombie T-shirt that costs how much?  When they are younger, your days of sleeping soundly are over as you sit up all night with babies, or the argument in the middle of the night about who got up with the baby last, then it's the carting them to all the different activities, then settling down to watch SpongeBob or iCarly with them to round out the weekend.

You go through those years, longing at times for those carefree days but never wishing it all would go away, I mean you really can't see your life any other way.  So you go through those years, spending the money, losing the sleep, watching your friends sit and enjoy that trendy restaurant through the window as you continue down to Big Bob's Pizza and Subs.  Finally your children realize that they can sleep in, and all the toys are moving out of your house and you think, "Wow, things are starting to run a little smoother again.  Life seems a little easier, everything is perfect, almost too perfect so you've got to go and screw it up...."

Sitting next to you is that little ball of fur that will start chewing up your shoes, electrical wires, kids stuffed animals.  Something that needs food, and snacks, and vet care.  Something that needs to scratch or lick their balls in the middle of the night while laying on your bed.  Yup, just when you thought it was good, you go and screw it up again....
